Lakers, Kobe Bryant ratchet up intensity in 107-100 loss to Celtics

first_img Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Error “My legs felt pretty good,” Bryant said. “So I thought, ‘What the hell? I might as well try it.’”Once it all ended, the feeling surrounding the Lakers’ 107-100 loss to the Boston Celtics on Sunday at Staples Center seemed far more significant than the actual implications. • RELATED: Celtics’ Jared Sullinger believes LA Lakers’ D’Angelo Russell will overcome fallout from video incidentThe Lakers (16-60) still lost another game to continue a depressing season destined to end with ping pong balls bouncing instead of champagne bottles popping. Yet, for one night the atmosphere suggested otherwise. “It’s weird, last time facing that green,” Bryant said. “But it’s been a joy to be able to be a part of a rivalry that I watched for so long.” • PHOTOS: Lakers trainer Gary Vitti throughout the yearsThe Lakers and Celtics traded nine ties and six lead changes in a game mirroring an NBA Finals game. Bryant posted 34 points on 11-of-28 shooting in 33 minutes in what marked his fourth game this season he logged at least 30 points. And the Lakers’ Julius Randle (20 points, 10 rebounds), Jordan Clarkson (17 points, five rebounds) and D’Angelo Russell (eight points, nine rebounds, six assists) played like seasoned veterans.Bryant credited his outburst to “rest, rest, rest” before also adding endless icing and stretching. Lakers coach Byron Scott also saw something else fuel Bryant’s motor. “This is probably the first game in a while that KB was dead serious the whole game,” Scott said. “He wasn’t joking around tonight. He wasn’t smiling with other opponents. He wasn’t talking a lot. He understands this series. Obviously he wanted to win this one badly. I don’t know if our other guys understand this. Hopefully in time they will.”Hopefully in time, the Lakers learn how to defend. They allowed Boston guard Isaiah Thomas to slice through Russell and Clarkson with 26 points on a 10-of-20 clip and 4-of-9 mark from 3-point range. Roy Hibbert’s lack of mobility and the Lakers’ delayed reactions on rotations contributed to the Celtics scoring 48 points in the paint. Jae Crowder (22), Evan Turner (17) and Amir Johnson (10) also logged double digits. “Lots of it is just inexperience. 25 percent is technique. The other 15 percent is knowledge and understanding who they’re playing and what their weaknesses are and what we want to do on that end of the floor against those guys,” Scott said. “The least amount is effort. It’s not understanding the coverages or applying them against certain guys.”Yet, the Lakers still matched the energy they had in a win against Miami after spending the previous week mired in sluggishness and infighting. After logging only nine minutes four days ago against Miami, Bryant played as if he was in the prime of his career instead of seven games away from retirement. It became good enough that Scott plans to play Bryant the same amount in the Lakers’ three remaining home games, while staying in the mid 20-minute range in three more road games. Bryant sank his first two jumpers. Bryant attacked the basket enough to draw frequent trips to the foul line (10). And Bryant converted on a two-handed dunk with 59 seconds left in the second quarter after stealing the ball from Thomas.“I didn’t think about it until after he dunked it,” Scott said. “I’m just glad he came down and he was healthy and was able to get back on defense.”After frequently resorting to one-on-one play throughout the season, Russell, Clarkson and Randle took turns attacking the basket, facilitating the offense and drawing rebounds. Russell connected with Randle for a three-point play that cut the C I didn’t think about it until after he dunked it. I’m just glad he came down and he was healthy and was able to get back on defense. eltics’ lead to 104-100 with 27.9 seconds remaining. Russell also nearly matched his career-high in rebounds (10 on Dec. 4, 2015 against Atlanta). This may not match the Lakers-Celtics Finals matchups decades ago that made for a combined 33 NBA championships. “The guys that don’t get it, I don’t understand it,” Bryant said. “If you’re a basketball player, you want to know everything about the game with the history of the game. I want to know how many of them have actually seen [Larry] Bird play or have seen Magic [Johnson] play for that manner. They weren’t even born or were barely born when I first started playing. The idea of seeing Magic and Bird play and James Worthy is a foreign concept to them. That is really strange. This may not match the animosity Scott held toward former Celtics forward Cedric Maxwell even when Scott coached the former New Jersey Nets from 2000 to 2004. “He asked me to do an interview and I told him no. I’m not talking to him,” Scott said before accepting his request the following year. After I finished the interview, I thought this guy is pretty cool. We sat down more and talked after the interview was over and I found out exactly why I hated him. They wanted everything we wanted.”This may not match the importance that Bryant attached toward the Lakers winning the 2010 NBA Finals over the Celtics after losing in 2008 to Boston.“There was no way we could go down in history as being remembered as being the team that lost twice to the Celtics,” Bryant said. “With all the history that has gone on, there is no way. Above winning the fifth championship ,it was more like not disappointing the memory of this organization and the rivalry that has been here for decades. That was more important.”Yet, the Lakers and Celtics on Sunday also showed everything the fans wanted even in a loss during a rebuilding season. center_img The chants reached a deafening pitch. The atmosphere suddenly mirrored a setting reserved for a competitive NBA Finals matchup between the sport’s biggest rivals.“Boston sucks!” the Lakers fans at Staples Center said endlessly. “Boston sucks!”The play elicited gasps and cheers. Four days after needing heat packs on nearly every part of his body, Kobe Bryant threw down the heat with a thunderous two-handed dunk.• PHOTOS: Kobe Bryant turns it on, but Celtics still defeat Lakers 107-100last_img read more
