Rich Hill throws simulated inning, set to start for Dodgers on Tuesday

first_img Fire danger is on Dave Roberts’ mind as Dodgers head to San Francisco The plan is for Hill to pitch two innings against the Padres on Tuesday. Hill said he would then start again the following Sunday in the regular-season finale at San Francisco, giving him two starts to convince the Dodgers he is worth the risk of including on their NL Division Series roster despite the MCL injury that knocked him from his start eight days ago in Baltimore.“I want to be part of this postseason team and I definitely think I help the team when I’m healthy,” Hill said. “Obviously, I’d like that to be as a starter. I don’t know how that’s going to be laid out. That’s not going to be my call. The biggest thing is just getting ready.”Dodgers manager Dave Roberts confirmed that Hill is penciled in to start against the Padres but would not commit to anything beyond that.“Right now our goal is his goal and that’s for him to help our ballclub going forward,” Roberts said. “He’s been a big part of what we’ve done this year. Right now, it’s obviously to start. If we can do that and run that play out, then great. But if he can’t build up that endurance or innings then we’ll pivot and we’ll have that conversation.”Shortly after resuming a throwing program last weekend, Hill said he would alter his mechanics to alleviate the pressure on his left knee. But the brace has made that unnecessary, he said, and the only change Friday involved his foot placement on the rubber. Dodgers hit seven home runs, sweep Colorado Rockies Dodgers’ Max Muncy trying to work his way out of slow start “That’s what we envision through next week. But things can change,” Roberts said of the order of those three. “For now, that’s the way I see it. But things can change.”The Dodgers will go against the numbers in another area. Roberts said Will Smith will catch on Sunday when Ryu starts. Ryu has a 1.60 ERA and .216 batting average against in 123-2/3 innings throwing to Russell Martin, 5.81 and .306 in 26-1/3 innings with Smith behind the plate.“I’m good with Hyun-Jin throwing to anyone,” Roberts said.UP NEXTRockies (RHP Chi Chi Gonzalez, 1-6, 4.28 ERA) at Dodgers (RHP Walker Buehler, 13-3, 3.15 ERA), Saturday, 6:10 p.m., SportsNet LA (where available), KTLA/Ch. 5, 570 AM LOS ANGELES — Armed with a knee brace and unlimited determination, Rich Hill is ready to pitch again.Hill threw a simulated inning to Kristopher Negron and Edwin Rios on Friday afternoon, five at-bats lasting approximately 18 pitches in all, and said he had no problems with the medial collateral ligament in his left knee.“It went really well,” the Dodgers left-hander said afterward. “Ball came out of my hand great. Knee felt really good with the brace on. I think the intensity was high as it would be in any game.“I checked the boxes and look forward to pitching in San Diego.”center_img “I didn’t see him compromising anything in his delivery,” Roberts said.Hill said the MRI and exam by Dr. Neal ElAttrache on Monday showed scar tissue from the Grade 1-2 MCL sprain in March was the cause of the pain he felt in Baltimore.“That’s what Dr. ElAttrache said,” Hill said. “It’s something that if you’re symptomatic in that area then it is an issue. If you’re not, then it’s something you can deal with. … It really depends on if you’re symptomatic or not. So far with the brace, it’s been great.”TURNER RETURNDodgers third baseman Justin Turner was not in the starting lineup on Friday, the 10th game in the past 13 days he has missed due to a sprained left ankle. But Roberts said Turner was available to pinch-hit and will be in the starting lineup Saturday – though in a limited capacity.“He’s coming along. He could have started today but we chose to have him available off the bench,” Roberts said before Friday’s game. “He’ll be available late to impact the game in some way and tomorrow have him in the starting lineup. I think it’ll kind of be a little like spring training where he’ll start, take a couple at-bats and then we’ll replace him and probably do the same thing on Sunday.”Turner was also named the winner of the Dodgers’ 14th annual Roy Campanella Award on Friday. The award goes to the player who “best exemplifies the spirit and leadership of the late Hall of Fame catcher” and is voted on by the Dodgers’ uniformed personnel.Turner also received the award in 2017.ROTATION SHUFFLEThe Dodgers will flip Walker Buehler and Hyun-Jin Ryu in the starting rotation this week. Buehler will start Saturday on five days’ rest while Ryu will go on Sunday now with a full week off.Roberts explained the change by saying the Dodgers did not want to give Buehler as long between starts this time around while giving Ryu more downtime for the second consecutive start.More likely, the Dodgers are lining up the trio of Clayton Kershaw, Buehler and Ryu for the postseason. It does not necessarily mean the trio will start the postseason in that order, however. The Dodgers are unlikely to make Ryu their Game 3 starter in the NLDS. That game will be on the road and Ryu has been a better pitcher at Dodger Stadium (9-1, 1.77 ERA) than on the road (3-4, 2.95). Buehler also has better numbers at home.Related Articles How Dodgers pitcher Ross Stripling topped the baseball podcast empire Cody Bellinger homer gives Dodgers their first walkoff win of season Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Errorlast_img read more
