Three incumbents on the Los Angeles Community College District board won re-elected to a third term while a fourth board member was forced into a runoff, according to unofficial election returns released today. Board members Mona Field, Warren Furutani and Sylvia Scott-Hayes each secured solid wins, capturing at least 65 percent of the votes cast in their respective districts. Each was elected in 1999. But incumbent Georgia Mercer, who represents District 5, received just 46 percent of the vote, forcing her into a runoff with Roy Burns, a 60-year-old retired sheriff’s deputy from Reseda, who got 32 percent. Challenger Mike Rives, of Los Angeles, received 11 percent and Hanna Hajjar, a Tarzana engineer, 10 percent. Burns was among a slate of four Republican challengers who ran against what they called the board’s mishandling of bond measures passed by voters in 2001 and 2003. Guy Mato, a 49-year-old Gardena real estate broker who ran against county Supervisor Yvonne B. Burke in 2004, was looking to unseat Scott-Hayes, 55. “The four of us who have been on the board have all been supporting each other,” Scott-Hayes said. Jozef Essavi, 32, of Winnetka, a former Los Angeles Valley College student, challenged Field, 53, of Eagle Rock. Hector Gurule, a 32-year-old computer consultant from Alhambra, faced off against Furutani. [email protected] last_img read more
