Accused in Berbice “revenge” murder remanded

first_imgThe accused in the Berbice River revenge murder was on Monday remanded when he appeared in a New Amsterdam, Berbice court.Dead: Elvis BenedictMurder accused:Roy GladstoneRoy Gladstone appeared unrepresented before Magistrate Peter Hugh and was not required to plea to the indictable charge.It is alleged that on June 18, 2019, at Sand Hills, Upper Berbice River, the 28-year-old man murdered Elvis Benedict, a 40-year-old chainsaw operator. He was remanded to prison until Thursday.Reports are the two men had an ongoing feud, which dates back several years. According to reports, Benedict allegedly went to the home of the accused with a cutlass and made several threats which lead to a confrontation. On June 19, one day after the threats were made, Benedict was found lying at the side of the road by a lorry driver with multiple injuries. He was picked up and ferried to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. However, before he died, he reportedly phoned a relative and related that he was injured by the accused, who was later arrested and handed over to Police. An autopsy performed on the body by Government Pathologist Dr Vivekanand Bridgemohan gave the cause of death as shock and haemorrhage resulting from multiple injuries. The body reportedly had lacerations to the lower back, centre, arm and jaw.
