ISL 2019-20: Jamshedpur FC Eye Hat-trick of Wins at Home as They Face Bengaluru FC

first_img bengaluru fcfootballindian footballindian super league First Published: November 2, 2019, 11:13 PM IST Jamshedpur: Jamshedpur FC will look to make a hat-trick of home wins when they face defending champions Bengaluru FC at the JRD Tata Sports Complex in Jamshedpur on Sunday. The Men of Steel have made a fantastic start to the Indian Super League 2019-20 season, having picked up six points in two games against Odisha FC and Hyderabad FC. Coach Antonio Iriondo’s team has played an attacking brand of football and has taken the game to the opposition. The key to their style of play has been midfielder Piti, who has controlled the proceedings and has shown that he has an eye for defence-splitting passes. Piti’s performance will be of utmost importance against Bengaluru, who are yet to win in two matches.“Playing against the defending champions is a big test. They are a very good team. It will be a mistake to see the table and judge Bengaluru. (But) we have been doing well so we have a chance to win. The important thing is to focus on your own team and your own strategies,” said Iriondo.Jamshedpur striker Sergio Castel, who has taken the ISL by storm with two goals to his name already, will also play a huge role for Iriondo’s team. And it isn’t just their foreign contingent, the Indian players such as Farukh Choudhary, Aniket Jadhav and Mobashir Rahman, have shone so far.Bengaluru FC, on the other hand, are searching for their first win this season after having picked only a point each in their last two fixtures. They drew against NorthEast United FC in their opening game at home and were unlucky to settle for a point against FC Goa, who had a late penalty from Ferran Corominas to thank for.“A lot of positive things to take away from the Goa game. I am proud of the way we played. Coro did not get any chance. My defenders read the situation well and stopped them from scoring. We have lost four points but now we have to be mentally stronger than ever. We will come out stronger against Jamshedpur,” said Bengaluru FC coach Carles Cuadrat.Whether Jamshedpur will look to keep the ball and dominate or choose to hit on the counter against Bengaluru is something which Iriondo has to take a call. But going by the way they have played in the two matches so far, they are comfortable doing either.A mouth-watering clash is on the cards as two solid teams go head-to-head this weekend. West Indies legends call for dissolution of WICB

first_imgGrenada, Apr 20 (PTI) West Indian cricket legends, including Garry Sobers and Vivian Richards have demanded the “dissolution” of WICB and a formation of an interim board in place of the “obsolete” body. On April 14, converging under the umbrella banner of Cricket Legends, Sobers and Richards, accompanied by Wes Hall and Andy Roberts, met with Grenada premier Keith Mitchell, chairman of the Prime Ministerial Committee on the Governance of West Indies Cricket, which appointed the CARICOM cricket review panel in the wake of the crisis that emerged following the West Indies withdrawal from Indias tour in October 2014. “During the last two decades, many different presidents and CEOs have led the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and yet, its performance has declined steadily with each passing year,” the Legends said in a joint media release. “The Board is an oligarchic structure that considers itself answerable to no one but itself. It is one of the few sporting institutions that have remained virtually unchanged in attitude and structure in the last 70 years or more.” Even the most powerful cricketing board, BCCI, the Legends observed, was under pressure from Indias Supreme Court to bring in structural changes in the running of the sport. “Inexplicably, the WICB prefers to maintain the status quo and yet, it expects to get different results while it continues to do the same things,” the release said. “We believe that revival of West Indies cricket will only happen when the Board undergoes structural adjustment, and when it improves the quality of its communication and leadership, and upgrades the management of key relationships.” They further stated in the release, “We are very proud of our legacy. We cannot now in good conscience stand idly by and watch everything that we fought so hard to build and achieve disappear right before our eyes because of the actions of inept Board members and an incompetent Board.” The Legends wish-list included immediate resignation of all current WICB directors, establishment of an interim board, and formation of a new board structure, among others. The five-member review panel comprising Murray, V Eudine Barriteau, Sir Dennis Byron, Dwain Gill and Warren Smith concluded its report on October 15, in which it described the WICB as “obsolete”. Italy, Germany play out 0-0 draw, Buffon equals European record

first_imgWorld champions Germany and Italy played out an entertaining 0-0 draw in their friendly international on Tuesday with both sides missing a string of chances in their final match of the year. The Germans, who beat Italy twice this year including in the Euro 2016 quarter-finals following a penalty shootout, were without half a dozen key players – with Toni Kroos, Manuel Neuer, Mesut Ozil and Jerome Boateng all missing. In a game which marked Italy keeper Gianluigi Buffon earning his 167th cap – equalling the European record – the hosts dominated the encounter but Germany also had their share of chances.Italy’s biggest chance came eight minutes from the end with Andrea Belotti hitting the post with a low shot.”It was a demanding game, tactically speaking,” said Germany coach Joachim Loew. “We managed to draw a lot of conclusions regarding the young players. We did it well for long stretches of the game.””We have now played six games in a row without conceding a goal so that is also a very positive thing.”Italy, unbeaten at the San Siro, got off to a better start and came close with a lightning quick break but Eder failed to properly connect with a Belotti cutback in the box, leaving Bernd Leno to pick up the loose ball. The Germans responded with a counter attack of their own and Ilkay Guendogan sent Leon Goretzka through but veteran keeper Buffon, who equalled the European record of Spain’s Iker Casillas, reacted quickly to slide in and save.advertisementThe hosts, however, kept up the pressure and forward Ciro Immobile thought he had scored when he beat the offside trap to fire past Leno only for his shot to sail narrowly wide.”The result is acceptable seeing as we played well and gave little to the world champions,” Giampiero Ventura, Italy’s coach, told reporters.”We played with different systems and I have to congratulate my players for their overall performance.”Germany put the ball in the net on the hour but Kevin Volland was ruled offside.Substitute Federico Bernardeschi almost scored with his first touch but his low drive after yet another textbook break by the Italians was saved by Leno, before Belotti hit the woodwork with his right-footed effort a little later.last_img read more

Injured Novak Djokovic will come back mentally stronger, says Pat Cash

first_imgTwelve-times grand slam champion Novak Djokovic’s enforced injury break gives him enough time to rediscover his intense playing style and will also make him mentally tougher on his return, former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash has said. The 30-year-old Serb said he will miss the rest of the tennis season, including next month’s U.S. Open, to recover from a right elbow injury.”It will take time for him to get his intensity back,” Cash, the 1987 Wimbledon singles champion, told the BBC.”Djokovic’s style is very similar to almost everyone else on the circuit, but he was just that bit fitter, that bit more flexible, that bit more mentally tough.”It is probably just what the doctor ordered, to take time off. After so many unbelievable years, 2017 has been poor for him.”Djokovic has struggled over the last 12 months on the court, losing all the grand slam titles he held simultaneously after winning the 2016 French Open. He also lost his world number one ranking to Andy Murray at the end of last year.Cash believes Djokovic should not be expected to return from his injury layoff as spectacularly as Roger Federer, who came back from a long-term knee issue earlier this year to lift Australian Open and Wimbledon titles.”It won’t be like Roger Federer, who was winning Grand Slams straight out of the blocks after he came back, but some time next year he will be playing well again,” Cash added.”He will be very sensible and make sure he is ready when he does come back.”advertisementlast_img read more
